Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Slovenian verbs come in pairs: one for ongoing actions (imperfective) and one for completed actions (perfective).
- Use imperfective for habits or ongoing actions: 'Berem knjigo' (I am reading a book).
- Use perfective for completed, one-time actions: 'Prebral sem knjigo' (I read/finished the book).
- Most verbs have a prefix to turn them from imperfective to perfective: 'pisati' -> 'napisati'.
Meanings
Slovenian verbs are categorized by aspect, which describes whether an action is viewed as a continuous process or a completed event.

“Pijem kavo.”
Perfective (Dovršni)
Focuses on the completion, the start, or the result of an action.
“Danes sem šel v šolo.”
