Inland describes areas or regions located away from the coast or the sea, situated towards the interior of a country or landmass. It can function as an adjective to describe a location or an adverb to describe movement toward such areas.
Think of 'IN the LAND'. If you are IN the LAND, you are far from the OUTside (the sea). IN-LAND = Inside the landmass.
