mandate (Noun and Verb)
A mandate is an official order or commission to do something, or the authority granted by a constituency to act as its representative. It can also function as a verb meaning to make something mandatory or to require it by law.
Think of a 'MAN' giving a 'DATE' for a deadline. A 'MAN-DATE' is an official order with a specific time to be done.
The meeting is a mandate. → The meeting is mandatory.
He mandated for us to leave. → He mandated that we leave.
