To remain in one place or state, or to delay action, until a particular time or event occurs. It implies a period of inactivity or anticipation.
Think of the 'i' in 'waited' as a person standing still, and the 'ed' as the past. You stood still in the past.
I waited the bus. → I waited for the bus.
We awaited for the news. → We awaited the news. (or We waited for the news.)
