Generosity is a major social currency. Being called 'হাড় কিপটে' is a significant insult to one's social standing. In the 'Adda' culture of Kolkata, the person who never 'treats' others is often labeled this way and might be excluded from future gatherings. During Eid, elders are expected to give 'Salami' (money). An elder who gives very little might be jokingly called 'হাড় কিপটে' by the kids. In villages, misers are often characters in folk tales, usually ending up losing their money to thieves or bad luck.
