Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Metaphors (อุปลักษณ์) equate two different things using 'เป็น' (pen) or 'คือ' (khue) to highlight shared characteristics vividly.
- Use 'เป็น' or 'คือ' to link the subject to a metaphorical object: 'เขาเป็นมือขวาของฉัน' (He is my right hand).
- Omit the linking verb entirely in poetic or advanced contexts for direct impact: 'ชาวนาคือกระดูกสันหลังของชาติ'.
- Distinguish from Similes (อุปมา) which use 'like' (เหมือน/ดั่ง) instead of 'is' (เป็น/คือ).
