Shadowing practice

Shadowing is a speaking practice method: listen to a short piece of speech, then repeat it aloud while copying its rhythm and phrasing.

Try shadowing with a video

  1. Choose a short video segment with speech you can mostly follow.
  2. Listen once with subtitles if they are available.
  3. Play the segment again and speak along just after the speaker.
  4. Repeat the same segment until the rhythm feels more comfortable, then move on.

What to listen for

  • Where words join together.
  • Which word receives the strongest stress.
  • How the speaker pauses between ideas.

Use the playback and subtitle controls available for that video. Start with short segments to avoid turning the practice into memorisation without understanding.
