मतलब
A polite way to offer someone a seat.
सांस्कृतिक पृष्ठभूमि
In Kolkata, offering a seat is often followed by 'Jol khaben?' (Will you drink water?), as it's customary to offer water to anyone who enters from the heat. Hospitality is extremely proactive. A host might physically pull out a chair or dust it off with their hand/handkerchief before saying 'Bashen' (a dialectal variant of Basun). In these circles, 'Anugraha kare' is preferred over 'Doya kare' as it sounds more 'Suddho' (pure/refined). If chairs aren't available, you might be offered a 'Mora' (cane stool) or a 'Paati' (mat). The phrase remains the same, showing that respect isn't tied to the quality of the furniture.
The Hand Gesture
Always gesture towards the seat with an open palm when saying this. Pointing with one finger is considered rude.
Don't Overuse
If someone is already sitting, don't say it! It sounds like you want them to sit somewhere else.

If you call someone 'Apni', you MUST use 'Basun'. If you call them 'Tumi', use 'Bosho'.

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले सवाल
3 सवालYes, 'Basun' is polite enough for most daily situations. 'Anugraha kare' adds an extra layer of polish.
Almost. 'Doya kare' is slightly more common in speech, while 'Anugraha kare' is slightly more formal/literary.
You can still say it! It means 'Please take a seat' on whatever is available (a bench, a mat, etc.).
