Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
When a sentence starts with a time expression, the verb must immediately follow it to maintain the V2 rule.
- If you move time to the front, the verb jumps to the second position: 'I dag spiser jeg' (Today eat I).
- The subject must move to the third position if the time expression takes the first spot.
- The verb never changes its position relative to the start of the sentence; it is always the second element.
Meanings
In Danish, the verb must always be the second element in a main clause. When you start a sentence with a time expression, you must invert the subject and verb.
Time-fronting
Placing a time adverbial at the start for emphasis.
“Nu spiser vi.”
“I går så jeg en film.”
