The week before the 1st day of my first year of teaching…wow, over a decade ago…was

00:11

an exciting time.

00:12

It was also stressful because I’m a bit of a perfectionist---but a bit of a messy,

00:17

unable to decorate my classroom kind of perfectionist---actually maybe I’m not a perfectionist.

00:21

I wanted to make my classroom inviting and exciting and…I really wanted my students

00:25

to walk in and think, “This is AMAZING.”

00:27

I could never make it look like what I imagined up.

00:30

But, the most amazing thing did happen in the week to follow.

00:33

I knew a colleague who had a friend who had a son who was going to college-confusing-

00:37

but anyway that son could not take his pet snake to college with him.

00:41

Some rule about dorms and snakes.

00:42

My colleague asked, “Would you like it?

00:44

They said they’d give you the cage and everything; it could be a classroom pet.”

00:48

I didn’t even have to think about it.

00:50

Of course.

00:51

So Spike, a Texas rat snake, became a classroom pet, an amazing, popular one at that.

00:58

He was friendly---well, for a snake… he’d let you hold him and not bite.

01:01

That year, I was the only one in the science wing with a pet snake and I’m pretty sure

01:05

there were some people that wondered what was the point.

01:07

Well, I’m big on a relevance so anytime I would teach a biology concept, I found some

01:11

way to work in Spike.

01:13

Predation?

01:14

Well, let’s talk about Spike’s appetite for rats.

01:16

Mitosis?

01:17

Let’s talk about why Spike even needs to make more cells.
