Temporal Markers
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Temporal markers define when an action occurs, usually placed at the start or end of a sentence for emphasis.
- Place 'Azi' (Today) at the start for emphasis: 'Azi mergem la piață.'
- Use 'Deja' (Already) before the verb: 'Am mâncat deja.'
- Use 'Încă' (Still/Yet) before the verb: 'Încă nu am plecat.'
Overview
How This Grammar Works
acum (now) or atunci (then).de.înainte de (before). These require a noun to follow them. Third, we have conjunctions.în timp ce (while) belong here. They usually require a verb to follow.Formation Pattern
acum (now), ieri (yesterday), or mâine (tomorrow) at the start or end of your sentence.
Marker + de + Noun rule. For example: înainte de masă (before the meal).
Marker + ce/când + Verbrule. For example:
după ce mănânc (after I eat).
ago, place acum before the time period. Acum două ore means two hours ago. Yes, the ago comes first in Romanian!
de. De trei ani means for three years. Remember, we don't use pentru for this!
la. La ora cinci (at five o'clock).
în. În august (in August) or în 2023 (in 2023).
When To Use It
Înainte de acest job, am lucrat în vânzări (Before this job, I worked in sales).Voi veni după ce termin munca (I will come after I finish work).Mă simt rău de ieri (I've felt sick since yesterday). Even when giving directions, they are vital.Virați la dreapta după farmacie (Turn right after the pharmacy). They help you avoid confusion in every possible scenario, from catching a train to explaining your life history to a new Romanian friend. Even native speakers use these constantly to keep their stories straight, so you're in good company! When Not To Use It
today, just say astăzi. You don't need a complex phrase like in this current day.Avoid using
după ce if you don't have a verb coming up.după. Don't use în for days of the week.în luni sounds like you are physically inside the day Monday. Just say luni. Also, be careful with pentru.for two hours, but in Romanian, if the action is still happening, pentru is a no-go. Use de. Using pentru here makes it sound like you are buying time at a store.Common Mistakes
ago placement. English speakers want to say două ore acum. In Romanian, it must be acum două ore. It's like putting your shoes on before your socks; it just feels wrong to a native. Another big one is la versus în. Never say în ora cinci. Always use la ora cinci. It's a small word, but it makes a huge difference. Forgetting the de in înainte de is also frequent. Înainte masa is incorrect; you need that little de to bridge the gap. Think of de as the glue holding your time expression together. Lastly, don't confuse după (after) with după-amiază (afternoon). They look similar, but they do very different jobs in a sentence!Contrast With Similar Patterns
după and după ce. This is the classic B1 hurdle. După is a preposition.După film, mergem acasă (After the movie, we go home). După ce is a conjunction.După ce vedem filmul, mergem acasă (After we see the movie, we go home). See the difference?de versus din. We use de for duration (de două ore).din for a starting point in space or a specific origin in time when used as an adjective (cafeaua din această dimineață - the coffee from this morning). It's like comparing a ruler (duration) to a pin on a map (origin).Quick FAQ
