Locative Case: Noun Endings (singular)
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
The Locative case tells us where something is, always following specific prepositions like 'o', 'pri', or 'v'.
- Use it to describe location: 'Sem v šoli' (I am at school).
- Use it for topics: 'Govorimo o filmu' (We are talking about the movie).
- Most masculine/neuter nouns add '-u' in the singular.

When To Use It
v to say in something. Use it with na to say on or at something.- Ordering food: Tell the waiter you are
v restavraciji(in the restaurant). - Asking directions: Someone might tell you the shop is
na trgu(on the square). - Job interviews: Talk about your experience
v podjetju(in the company). - Socializing: Say you are
pri prijatelju(at a friend's place). - Topics: Use
oto say you are talkingaboutafilmu(movie). - Time: Use
poto sayaftera certain time, likepo kosilu(after lunch). - Proximity: Use
obfor thingsbesideornext tosomething.
When Not To Use It
v, na, o, pri, po, or ob, it is not Locative. Using it alone is like wearing one shoe. It feels wrong and people will notice.Common Mistakes
-u and -i endings. They might say v kavi when they mean v kavo. Wait, that is a different error! A common one is saying v Ljubljana instead of v Ljubljani. Always remember the feminine -i. Another mistake is forgetting the -u for masculine words. People often say v avto when they are sitting in the car. It should be v avtu. Native speakers might forgive you, but your teacher will sigh. Don't worry, even we mess up sometimes after a long day. Just remember: if you are static, use the Locative. If you are moving, use the Accusative. It is a classic beginner trap. You will fall into it once or twice. Just climb back out and keep practicing.Contrast With Similar Patterns
k or h (towards). Locative uses the six prepositions we discussed. It is like two people wearing the same outfit.Mesto is just a city. V mestu is where the party is happening.Quick FAQ
