Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

In Danish main clauses, the conjugated verb must always be the second element in the sentence.

  • The verb is always the second constituent: 'Jeg spiser æbler' (I eat apples).
  • Time or place markers at the start count as one element: 'I dag spiser jeg æbler'.
  • The subject can come after the verb if something else is first: 'Nu spiser jeg'.
Element 1 + Verb + Subject + Rest

Count to two

Always count the elements in your sentence. If the verb isn't second, you've made a mistake.
⚠️

Subject trap

Don't assume the subject is always first. It's the most common trap for English speakers.
🎯

Inversion practice

Practice moving time words to the front of your sentences.
💬

Natural flow

Using V2 correctly makes you sound much more like a native speaker.

Smart Tips

Always flip the subject and verb.

I dag jeg spiser. I dag spiser jeg.

Count the words. Is the verb second?

Nu jeg går. Nu går jeg.

Use V2 to sound professional.

Jeg i dag skriver. I dag skriver jeg.

Focus on the verb position.

Altid han kommer. Altid kommer han.

उच्चारण

Stress

Falling intonation for statements.

याद करें

स्मृति सहायक

The Verb is the King; he must always sit on the second throne.

दृश्य संबंध

Imagine a king (the verb) sitting on a throne labeled '2'. The subject and the time-phrase are two courtiers fighting for the first seat, but the king never moves from his throne.

Rhyme

No matter what starts the line, the verb is always number two in line.

Story

The Verb is a very strict host. He insists that he is the second person to enter the room. If the Subject enters first, the Verb follows. If a Time-phrase enters first, the Verb still rushes in to be second, forcing the Subject to wait until third.
