Perfect Tense with Modal Verbs
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use 'պետք է' or 'կարող էի' with a past participle and the verb 'լինել' to express past regrets or possibilities.
- For 'should have', use 'Պետք է' + Past Participle + Past Auxiliary (լինեի).
- For 'must have' (probability), use 'Պետք է որ' + Past Participle + Present Auxiliary (լինի).
- For 'could have', use 'Կարող էի' followed by the infinitive or perfective form.

Meanings
This structure is used to express actions that were supposed to happen in the past but didn't, or to make logical deductions about past events.
Past Obligation / Regret
Expressing that something was necessary or expected in the past but was not fulfilled.
“Ես պետք է ավելի շատ սովորած լինեի: (I should have studied more.)”

Past Probability / Deduction
Expressing a strong belief that something happened in the past based on evidence.
