Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

In Armenian Perfect, the auxiliary verb 'jumps' before the main verb in negatives and carries the question mark in questions.

  • Negation: Place 'չ' (ch) before the auxiliary and move it before the participle: 'չեմ կերել' (I haven't eaten).
  • Questions: Place the question mark (՞) on the auxiliary verb or the word you are emphasizing.
  • Word Order: In negatives, the auxiliary verb MUST precede the participle, unlike affirmative sentences.
❌ [չ + Aux] + Verb-ել/ալ | ❓ Word՞ + [Aux] + Verb-ել/ալ

🎯

The 3rd Person Trap

Always remember that 'է' becomes 'չի' in the negative. Saying 'չէ կերել' is a dead giveaway that you are a beginner.
💡

Question Mark Placement

Put the 'paruyk' (՞) on the vowel of the word you are most curious about. If you ask 'Դո՞ւ ես տեսել', you are asking 'Was it YOU?'. If you ask 'Տեսե՞լ ես', you are asking 'Did you SEE?'.
⚠️

No Double Auxiliaries

Don't use 'have' and 'be' together. Armenian only uses the 'to be' auxiliary (եմ, ես...) for the Perfect tense.
💬

Polite Negation

In formal settings, instead of just saying 'Չեմ արել' (I haven't done it), people often add 'Ցավոք' (Unfortunately) to soften the negation: 'Ցավոք, դեռ չեմ հասցրել':

Smart Tips

Put the question mark on the auxiliary verb if you want to be neutral, or on the main verb if you want to be slightly more descriptive.

Դու տեսել ես՞: Դու տեսե՞լ ես:

Always remember to keep the verb negative. Armenian loves double negatives!

Ես երբեք տեսել եմ: Ես երբեք չեմ տեսել:

Check if it's a mistake. In the Perfect tense, 'չի' should almost always have a verb following it.

Նա տեսել չի: Նա չի տեսել:

The negative auxiliary usually follows 'Ինչո՞ւ' immediately.

Ինչո՞ւ դու չես եկել: Ինչո՞ւ չես եկել:

The 'Negative Magnet': The word 'չ' (ch) is like a magnet that pulls the auxiliary verb to the front of the sentence.

दृश्य संबंध

Rhyme

When you say no, the 'em' must go / Right before the verb, don't you know!

Story

Armen wanted to say he hadn't finished his coffee. He started with 'Surch@ khmel em' (I have drunk the coffee). But then he saw the 'ch' monster. The 'em' was so scared it jumped in front of 'khmel' to protect itself, becoming 'ch-em khmel'.

चैलेंज

Try to find 5 things in your room you haven't used today and say them out loud in Armenian: 'Այս գիրքը չեմ օգտագործել'...

सांस्कृतिक नोट्स

When visiting an Armenian home, you will often be asked 'Կերե՞լ ես' (Have you eaten?). Even if you say 'Այո, կերել եմ' (Yes, I have eaten), expect to be served more food!

Using the plural 'եք' (you) in questions is essential when speaking to elders or strangers, even in the Perfect tense.

The Armenian Perfect tense evolved from the classical Grabar resultative constructions using the participle in -եալ.

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले सवाल (8)

This is an irregular shift in Armenian. While other persons just add 'չ' (չեմ, չես), the 3rd person singular 'է' becomes 'չի' to distinguish it from the negative of 'is' (which is 'չէ').

No, in modern Eastern Armenian, the negative auxiliary `չեմ, չես...` must always precede the participle. Putting it after is grammatically incorrect.

It goes on the stressed vowel of the word you are questioning. In `Տեսե՞լ ես`, it's on the 'ե'. In `Դո՞ւ ես`, it's on the 'ու'.

`Չեմ կերել` (Perfect) means 'I haven't eaten (and I'm hungry now)'. `Չկերա` (Aorist) means 'I didn't eat (at that specific time in the past)'.

Usually no. The auxiliary verb already tells you who the subject is. `Տեսե՞լ ես` already means 'Have *you* seen?'.

Use the word `երբեք` (never) along with the negative perfect: `Երբեք չեմ տեսել` (I have never seen). Armenian uses double negatives.

Yes, but the word order and some forms differ. In Western Armenian, you might hear `տեսած չեմ` instead of `չեմ տեսել`.

No, the Perfect tense is strictly for past actions with present results. For the future, you would use the Future tense (`կտեսնեմ`).
