The Definite Article: The Suffix -ը/-ն
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
In Armenian, the definite article is a suffix attached to the end of a word, not a separate word like 'the'.
- Use -ը for words ending in a consonant: 'գիրք' (book) -> 'գիրքը' (the book).
- Use -ն for words ending in a vowel: 'տղա' (boy) -> 'տղան' (the boy).
- If the word ends in a silent 'ը', it is replaced by the suffix: 'հաց' -> 'հացը'.

Meanings
The definite article indicates that a noun is specific, known, or previously mentioned, functioning similarly to 'the' in English.
Definiteness
