Lao question words usually stay in the same position as the word they replace, unlike English where they move to the front.
- Who (phai) replaces the subject or object: 'Phai pai?' (Who is going?)
- What (yang) replaces the object: 'Chao kin yang?' (What are you eating?)
- Where (sai) replaces the location: 'Chao pai sai?' (Where are you going?)
