The Zero Ending in Genitive Plural

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Many Czech nouns in the genitive plural have no ending at all, meaning you just use the base stem.

  • Feminine nouns ending in -a drop the -a: 'žena' (woman) -> 'žen' (of women).
  • Neuter nouns ending in -o drop the -o: 'město' (city) -> 'měst' (of cities).
  • Some masculine nouns add nothing to the stem if they end in a consonant: 'hrad' (castle) -> 'hradů' (wait, this is an exception!).
Noun Stem + Ø (Zero Ending) = Genitive Plural
