Expressing Obligation

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Express obligation in Kazakh using the suffix '-у керек' or '-у тиіс' attached to the verb root.

  • Use '-у керек' for general necessity: 'Мен баруым керек' (I must go).
  • Use '-у тиіс' for moral or formal obligation: 'Сен оқуың тиіс' (You ought to study).
  • Add possessive suffixes to the verb root before the modal: 'Менің келуім керек' (My coming is necessary).
