In Bangladeshi corporate and political culture, 'Tadbiri' (lobbying) often involves a significant amount of 'ga malish'. It is seen as a social lubricant in high-stakes environments. In villages, the literal act of massaging an elder's feet or body is a respected tradition of 'seba' (service). One must be careful not to use the idiom 'ga malish করা' when describing this sincere act of devotion. Among Bengalis living abroad, the phrase is often used to describe people who try too hard to impress their non-Bengali bosses or neighbors.
