Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use these three words to show how recent an action is or if it happened sooner than expected.

  • Use 'just' for things that happened a moment ago: 'I've just arrived.'
  • Use 'already' for things that happened sooner than expected: 'I've already finished.'
  • Use 'yet' for things you expect to happen soon: 'Have you finished yet?'
Subject + have/has + (just/already) + V3 + (yet?)

Overview

How This Grammar Works

Formation Pattern

1
Für just (sehr neue Aktionen): Subjekt + have/has + just + Partizip Perfekt.
2
Für already (früher als erwartet fertig): Subjekt + have/has + already + Partizip Perfekt.
3
Für yet in Verneinungen: Subjekt + haven't/hasn't + Partizip Perfekt + yet.
4
Für yet in Fragen: Have/Has + Subjekt + Partizip Perfekt + yet?
5
Conjugation Table:
6
Form | Example | Translation
7
--- | --- | ---
8
Positive (Just) | I have just arrived. | Ich bin gerade angekommen.
9
Positive (Already) | She has already called. | Sie hat schon angerufen.
10
Negative (Yet) | We haven't started yet. | Wir haben noch nicht angefangen.
11
Question (Yet) | Have they paid yet? | Haben sie schon bezahlt?

When To Use It

Common Mistakes

Der größte Fehler ist die Position. Falsch: 'I have finished already my homework'. Richtig: 'I have already finished my homework'.

Contrast With Similar Patterns

Im amerikanischen Englisch sagen Leute oft 'I just ate' im Past Simple.

Quick FAQ

Q

Kann ich already in Fragen benutzen?

Ja! Um Überraschung zu zeigen. 'Have you already finished?' bedeutet 'Wow, das ging aber schnell!'.

💡

She has just finished her work.
oder
Have you seen it yet?
⚠️

Keine spezifische Vergangenheitszeit!

Vermeide just, already oder yet mit spezifischen Zeitangaben aus der Vergangenheit, wie yesterday, last week oder at 5 PM. Diese Ausdrücke sind dicke Freunde vom Simple Past, nicht vom Present Perfect! "I've just arrived
ist super, aber NICHT
I've just arrived yesterday"!
🎯

Have you finished your lunch yet?
,
Has the movie started yet?
Dieses aktive Üben stärkt deine Sprachmuskeln!
Has your friend called yet?
🌍

"I've just posted a new photo!"
💡

Achte auf den feinen Unterschied!

Pass auf die Nuancen auf: "I've just eaten
bedeutet, du bist gerade satt.
I already ate
I've just bought it vs. I've already bought it".

Smart Tips

Always use the Present Perfect with 'just'.

I just arrived. I've just arrived.

Use 'already' for the checkmarks and 'yet' for the empty boxes.

I did that. I didn't do that. I've already done that. I haven't done that yet.

Move 'already' to the end of the question.

Have you already finished? Have you finished already?!

Use 'Not yet' as a polite, short answer.

No, I didn't. Not yet.

Kulturelle Hinweise

British speakers are very strict about using Present Perfect with 'just', 'already', and 'yet'. Using Simple Past ('I already ate') sounds very American to them.

In the US, it is extremely common to use the Simple Past with these adverbs, especially in casual speech.

Using 'already' in a workplace can signal efficiency, but using 'yet' in a question can sometimes sound impatient if not phrased politely.

The Present Perfect construction (have + participle) developed in Old English but became standard in Middle English. 'Already' comes from 'all' + 'ready' (fully prepared).

Gesprächseinstiege

Have you seen any good movies yet this year?

What's something you've just started learning?

FAQ (8)

Yes! Use it when you are surprised. `Have you finished already?` means 'Wow, that was fast!'

`Just` is much more immediate (seconds or minutes ago). `Recently` can mean days or weeks ago.

Only as a conjunction meaning 'but' (e.g., `Yet, he didn't give up`). As a time marker, it stays at the end.

In British English, yes. In American English, it's perfectly fine. For exams, use `I've just done it`.

Because `yet` implies that the action will happen in the future, while `already` implies it happened in the past.

No, `just` as a time marker for 'a moment ago' is only for past or perfect tenses.

In the Simple Past, it goes before the verb: `I already ate`.

99% of the time, yes. In very formal English, you might see `I have not yet seen it`, but it's rare.
