Presente Perfecto: Already, Yet, Just (ya, todavía no, justo)

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use these three words to show how recent an action is or if it happened sooner than expected.

  • Use 'just' for things that happened a moment ago: 'I've just arrived.'
  • Use 'already' for things that happened sooner than expected: 'I've already finished.'
  • Use 'yet' for things you expect to happen soon: 'Have you finished yet?'
Subject + have/has + (just/already) + V3 + (yet?)

Overview

How This Grammar Works

Formation Pattern

1
Para just (acciones muy recientes): Sujeto + have/has + just + Participio.
2
Para already (acciones terminadas antes de lo esperado): Sujeto + have/has + already + Participio.
3
4
Para yet en preguntas: Have/Has + Sujeto + Participio + yet?
5
Conjugation Table:
6
Form | Example | Translation
7
--- | --- | ---
8
Positive (Just) | I have just arrived. | Acabo de llegar.
9
Positive (Already) | She has already called. | Ella ya ha llamado.
10
Negative (Yet) | We haven't started yet. | Aún no hemos empezado.
11
Question (Yet) | Have they paid yet? | ¿Ya han pagado ellos?

When To Use It

Incorrecto: 'I have finished already my homework'. Correcto: 'I have already finished my homework'.

Contrast With Similar Patterns

En inglés americano, oirás 'I just ate' usando el Past Simple.

Quick FAQ

Q

¿Puedo usar already en preguntas?

¡Sí! Para mostrar sorpresa. 'Have you already finished?' significa '¡Guau, qué rápido!'.

💡

La posición del adverbio importa

Recuerda poner 'just' y 'already' entre 'have/has' y el participio pasado del verbo principal. "I've just seen it."
⚠️

¡Nada de tiempos pasados específicos!

Evita usar 'just', 'already' o 'yet' con marcadores de tiempo pasado específicos como 'yesterday', 'last week' o 'at 5 PM'. I went yesterday.
🎯

Have you finished your lunch yet?
o
Has the movie started yet?
Esta práctica activa te ayudará muchísimo.
🌍

"I've just seen your message!"
💡

Escucha la sutil diferencia

Presta atención al matiz: "I've just eaten
implica que estás lleno ahora mismo.
I already ate
implica que no necesitas comer de nuevo. ¡Pequeñas palabras, gran impacto en el significado!
I've just arrived, I'm tired."

Smart Tips

Always use the Present Perfect with 'just'.

I just arrived. I've just arrived.

Use 'already' for the checkmarks and 'yet' for the empty boxes.

I did that. I didn't do that. I've already done that. I haven't done that yet.

Move 'already' to the end of the question.

Have you already finished? Have you finished already?!

Use 'Not yet' as a polite, short answer.

No, I didn't. Not yet.

Pronunciación

/aɪv dʒʌst/

Notas culturales

British speakers are very strict about using Present Perfect with 'just', 'already', and 'yet'. Using Simple Past ('I already ate') sounds very American to them.

In the US, it is extremely common to use the Simple Past with these adverbs, especially in casual speech.

Using 'already' in a workplace can signal efficiency, but using 'yet' in a question can sometimes sound impatient if not phrased politely.

The Present Perfect construction (have + participle) developed in Old English but became standard in Middle English. 'Already' comes from 'all' + 'ready' (fully prepared).

Preguntas frecuentes (8)

Yes! Use it when you are surprised. `Have you finished already?` means 'Wow, that was fast!'

`Just` is much more immediate (seconds or minutes ago). `Recently` can mean days or weeks ago.

Only as a conjunction meaning 'but' (e.g., `Yet, he didn't give up`). As a time marker, it stays at the end.

In British English, yes. In American English, it's perfectly fine. For exams, use `I've just done it`.

Because `yet` implies that the action will happen in the future, while `already` implies it happened in the past.

No, `just` as a time marker for 'a moment ago' is only for past or perfect tenses.

In the Simple Past, it goes before the verb: `I already ate`.

99% of the time, yes. In very formal English, you might see `I have not yet seen it`, but it's rare.
