Forming the Past Participle

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

The past participle is the essential building block for all compound tenses in Italian, formed by changing verb endings to -ato, -uto, or -ito.

  • -ARE verbs become -ato: parlare → parlato.
  • -ERE verbs become -uto: vedere → veduto (or visto).
  • -IRE verbs become -ito: dormire → dormito.
Verb Stem + (-ato/-uto/-ito) = Past Participle
