Malayalis rarely travel alone. If you see someone walking, it's common to ask where they are going and if you can join. This is not seen as intrusive but as friendly. Among youngsters, 'kūṭe varāmō' is often shortened or replaced by 'pōrunnō?' (coming along?) in very casual settings. In the Gulf or Western countries, Malayalis use this phrase to maintain a sense of community in a foreign land. In traditional homes, a younger person might ask an elder 'കൂടെ വരാമോ?' as a sign of respect, seeking their guidance on a trip.
