Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Most Swedish nouns add -ar, -er, or -n, but some irregular nouns change their internal vowel or stay the same.

  • Some nouns ending in -el, -er, -en lose their vowel: 'cykel' becomes 'cyklar'.
  • Nouns ending in -a often drop the -a and add -or: 'flicka' becomes 'flickor'.
  • Some common nouns don't change at all in the plural: 'ett barn' becomes 'två barn'.
Noun (singular) + Ending/Change = Noun (plural)

Meanings

Irregular plurals are nouns that do not follow the standard suffix rules (-or, -ar, -er, -n, -0) and instead undergo internal vowel shifts or remain unchanged.

1

Vowel Shift

Nouns that change their internal vowel (e.g., 'fot' to 'fötter').

“Min fot gör ont.”

“Mina fötter är trötta.”

2

Zero Plural

Nouns that remain identical in singular and plural (common for neuter nouns ending in consonants).

“Ett barn springer.”

“Många barn springer.”

3

Syncopation

Nouns that drop a vowel before adding the plural suffix.

“En cykel står här.”

“Två cyklar står här.”
