Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
In a Dutch main clause, the conjugated verb must always be in the second position.
- The verb is the anchor: 'Ik eet een appel' (I eat an apple).
- Time or place can move to the front: 'Vandaag eet ik een appel' (Today eat I an apple).
- The subject must move after the verb if something else takes the first spot.

Meanings
The V2 rule dictates that the finite verb must occupy the second syntactic position in a main clause, regardless of what the first element is.
Standard Declarative
The verb follows the subject.
“Ik ben moe.”
“Hij werkt hier.”
Inverted Declarative
The verb follows an adverbial or object moved to the front.
“Nu ga ik slapen.”
“Daar staat mijn fiets.”
