Khmer subscripts (ជើងអក្សរ) are secondary consonant forms written beneath the main consonant to create clusters without a vowel.

  • Subscripts are written directly under the main consonant: ក + ្ + ម = ក្ម (kma).
  • Some subscripts look identical to their main form (e.g., ្ក), while others change shape (e.g., ្ញ).
  • The subscript indicates that the two consonants are pronounced together as a cluster.

Meanings

A subscript (ជើងអក្សរ) is a modified version of a consonant that attaches to the bottom of a preceding consonant to form a cluster.
