- Each character represents a CV (consonant-vowel) pair, like 'ለ' (lä).
- The base form is the 'ä' sound, which changes shape for other vowels.
- Consonants are never written alone; they always carry a vowel sound.

Meanings
The Amharic writing system is an abugida, meaning each character represents a consonant plus a vowel. You don't spell words letter-by-letter; you assemble them by syllable.
