फोन करना

You treat करना as the part that changes based on time and person. For example, if you want to say 'I will call,' you say मैं फोन करूँगा. If you are calling right now, it is मैं फोन कर रहा हूँ. Just remember to put the person you are calling before the phrase. Usually, you add the particle को (to) after the person's name. So, it looks like: [Person] + को + फोन करना.

Use this whenever a voice call is involved. It works for mobile phones, landlines (if you can find one!), and even internet calls. Use it when you are running late for a meeting. Use it when you need to tell your mom you ate dinner. It is perfect for professional settings too. If you need to tell a client you will follow up, फोन करना is perfectly polite and clear.

Don't use this if you are just sending a text message. For texting, we usually say मेसेज करना (message karna). Also, if someone is calling you, you don't 'do' the phone; you 'pick up' the phone (फोन उठाना). Avoid using it for video calls if you want to be specific. For those, people often just say वीडियो कॉल करना to avoid confusion. Don't use it if you are just 'playing' on your phone either!

India had a massive mobile revolution in the early 2000s. Before that, landlines were rare and precious. Now, everyone has a smartphone. This phrase replaced older, more formal Hindi words for 'telephoning'. There is also the famous Indian 'missed call' culture. People used to फोन करना and hang up after one ring to save money. It was a secret code for 'I've reached' or 'Call me back'!

You will often hear people just say कॉल करना (call karna). It is exactly the same thing. In very formal Hindi, you might hear दूरभाष करना, but honestly, nobody says that in real life. If you say that at a cafe, people might think you've traveled from the 1950s. Stick to फोन करना or कॉल करना to sound like a local.
