Wish and If Only: Regrets and Unreal Situations

Use wish and if only to express regrets about the present or past. Present regret: wish + past simple. Past regret: wish + past perfect. Annoyance: wish + would.

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use 'wish' or 'if only' + past tense to talk about things you want to change in the present.

  • Use Past Simple for present wishes: 'I wish I had more time.'
  • Use Past Perfect for past regrets: 'If only I had studied harder.'
  • Use 'would' for annoying habits: 'I wish you would stop talking.'
Subject + wish/if only + (Subject) + Past Tense Verb

Wish and if only let you talk about things you want to be different — either now or in the past. The tense after "wish" tells you WHEN the regret is about.

Wish + Past Simple — Present Regret

Past tense = unreal present (I don't have this now)

✓ I wish I knew the answer. (I don't know)

✓ She wishes she lived closer. (she doesn't)

Wish + Past Perfect — Past Regret

✓ I wish I had studied harder. (I didn't)

✓ She wishes she hadn't said that.

Wish + Would — Annoyance / Wanting Change

For others or situations — NOT for yourself

If Only — Stronger Emotion

If only I had listened to you!

If only I knew what to do.
