Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Shorten complex sentences by using -ći for simultaneous actions and -vši for completed ones, provided the subject remains the same.
- Use -ći with imperfective verbs for 'while doing' (e.g., 'Pjevajući, hodao je').
- Use -vši with perfective verbs for 'having done' (e.g., 'Završivši posao, otišao je').
- The subject of the participle MUST be the same as the main verb's subject.

No. The -ći suffix implies an ongoing, simultaneous action, which is incompatible with the completed nature of perfective verbs.
It is rare in casual speech. It is mostly found in formal writing, literature, or fixed expressions like `uzevši u obzir` (taking into account).
It occurs when the participle's implied subject is different from the main clause's subject, e.g., `Trčeći ulicom, kapa mi je pala.` (While running, my hat fell). Here, the hat is running!
Simply place the word `ne` before the participle: `ne znajući`, `ne vidjevši`.
Most follow the rules, but some verbs like `biti` (to be) become `budući` (present) and `bivši` (past). Note that `budući` is often used as a conjunction meaning 'since'.
Yes, they are very frequently used to start sentences to set the scene or provide background context.
