Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Finnish vowels are divided into two teams: Front (Ä, Ö, Y) and Back (A, O, U); they cannot mix in the same word.
- Front vowels (Ä, Ö, Y) only hang out with other front vowels in a word (e.g., 'pöytä').
- Back vowels (A, O, U) only hang out with other back vowels (e.g., 'auto').
- E and I are neutral and can hang out with anyone (e.g., 'kieli').
