Perfekt of Reflexive Verbs

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

To form the past of reflexive verbs, use the auxiliary 'biti' + the past participle + the reflexive particle 'se'.

  • Use 'sam, si, je, smo, ste, su' for the auxiliary verb.
  • The reflexive particle 'se' stays near the verb, usually after the auxiliary.
  • In questions, the particle 'se' often moves to the second position in the sentence.

Subject Pronouns

You can drop the subject pronoun (Ja, Ti, On) because the auxiliary verb already tells you who it is.
⚠️

Gender Matters

Always check if you are talking about a male or female subject. The participle ending changes!
🎯

Clitic Order

If you have two clitics (e.g., 'mi' and 'se'), 'se' usually comes last.
💬

Informal Speech

In informal speech, people often shorten 'sam' to 'san' in some dialects.

Smart Tips

Always check the gender of the subject first.

Ja (female) sam se umio. Ja sam se umila.

Remember that 'nisam' is one word.

Ja ne sam se umio. Ja se nisam umio.

Use 'li' for formal questions.

Jesi se umio? Jesi li se umio?

Keep 'se' close to the auxiliary.

On mi je se nasmijao. On mi se nasmijao.

Aussprache

sam-se-U-mio

Clitic stress

Auxiliary verbs and 'se' are clitics and are usually not stressed; they lean on the following word.

Rising intonation at the end for yes/no questions.

Kulturelle Hinweise

In Dalmatia, people often use 'se' differently or drop it in specific dialectal constructions.

Standard usage is strictly followed, but clitic placement is very fluid in fast speech.

Similar to standard, but with distinct vowel pronunciations in the participle.

The reflexive particle 'se' comes from the Proto-Slavic *sę, which is a shortened form of the accusative case of the reflexive pronoun.
