Causative with Reflexive Verbs
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use the suffixes -ացն- or -եցն- to turn a self-action (reflexive) into a caused action (causative).
- Drop the reflexive -վ- or -ն- suffix before adding the causative marker. Example: հագնվել becomes հագցնել.
- Add -ացն- for -ալ verbs and -եցն- for -ել verbs. Example: լողանալ becomes լողացնել.
- Use the auxiliary verb 'տալ' (to give) for indirect causation. Example: սանրել տալ (to have someone combed).
Meanings
The causative form indicates that the subject causes another person to perform an action or undergo a state, often involving verbs that are naturally reflexive (actions done to oneself).
Direct Causation
The subject directly performs the action on someone else using the -ացն-/-եցն- suffix.
“Նա հագցնում է տիկնիկին: (She is dressing the doll.)”
Indirect Causation (Permissive)
Using the verb 'տալ' (to give/let) to indicate having someone else do something.
“Ես մազերս կտրել տվեցի: (I had my hair cut.)”
