Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

In Latvian, almost every single word is stressed on the very first syllable, regardless of how long the word is.

  • Always stress the first syllable: 'Mā-te' (Mother).
  • Compound words keep the stress on the first part: 'Dien-vid-i' (South).
  • Even long words follow this: 'Svei-ci-nā-jums' (Greeting).
