Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
In Latvian, a small line above a vowel (macron) doubles its length, completely changing the meaning of the word.
- A vowel without a line is short: 'a' as in 'cat'.
- A vowel with a line (ā, ē, ī, ū) is long: hold it for twice as long.
- Changing length changes meaning: 'ceļš' (road) vs 'ceļš' (shoulder/rise).
