Wackernagel's Law: The Second Position

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

In Serbian, short words called clitics (like 'sam', 'ga', 'mi') must sit in the second position of a sentence.

  • Clitics cannot start a sentence: 'Ga vidim' is wrong; 'Vidim ga' is correct.
  • Clitics cluster together in a specific order: Auxiliary + Dative + Accusative + Reflexive.
  • The first position can be a single word or a whole phrase.

Meanings

Wackernagel's Law dictates that unstressed grammatical particles (clitics) must occupy the second syntactic position in a clause.

1

Auxiliary placement

Placing auxiliary verbs like 'sam', 'si', 'je' after the first element.

“Ja sam kupio hleb.”

“Danas sam umoran.”

2

Object pronoun placement

Placing short object pronouns like 'ga', 'mu', 'joj' after the first element.

“On ga voli.”

“Dala mu je knjigu.”

3

Reflexive clitic placement

Placing the reflexive 'se' after the first element.

“On se smeje.”

“Kako se zoveš?”
