Coordination of Multiple Independent Clauses

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Coordination links independent thoughts using conjunctions like 'i', 'ali', or 'stoga' to create flow and logical hierarchy in your speech.

  • Copulative (Sastavne): Use 'i', 'pa', 'te' for addition without commas. Example: 'Došao je i vidio.'
  • Adversative (Suprotne): Use 'a', 'ali', 'nego' for contrast, always with a comma. Example: 'Htio je, ali nije mogao.'
  • Conclusive (Zaključne): Use 'dakle', 'stoga' for results, always with a comma. Example: 'Pao je mrak, stoga smo krenuli.'

Meanings

Coordination (parataxis) is the process of linking two or more independent clauses that are grammatically equal and could stand alone as separate sentences.

1

Sastavne (Copulative)

Linking ideas that go together in time or logic using 'i', 'pa', 'te', 'ni', 'niti'.

“Sjedili smo u tišini i promatrali more.”

“Niti piše niti se javlja.”

2

Suprotne (Adversative)

Linking ideas that contrast or contradict each other using 'a', 'ali', 'nego', 'no', 'već'.

“Planirali smo izlet, ali je počela kiša.”

“Nije to učinio on, nego njegov brat.”

3

Rastavne (Disjunctive)

Offering a choice between two or more possibilities using 'ili'.

“Možemo ići u kino ili možemo ostati kod kuće.”

“Ili ćeš priznati ili ćemo saznati sami.”

4

Zaključne (Conclusive)

The second clause is a logical conclusion of the first, using 'dakle', 'zato', 'stoga'.

“Nisi učio, dakle past ćeš ispit.”

“Bilo je kasno, stoga smo ubrzali korak.”

5

Isključne (Exclusive)

The second clause expresses an exception to the first, using 'samo', 'jedino', 'tek'.

“Svi su došli, samo je on zakasnio.”

“Sve je bilo spremno, jedino smo još čekali potvrdu.”

🎯

The 'While' Test

If you're unsure between 'a' and 'ali', try translating to English. If 'while' or 'whereas' fits better than 'but', use 'a'.
⚠️

No Comma with 'i'

Avoid the English habit of putting a comma before 'and' in a list or between two short clauses. In Croatian, it looks like an error.
💡

Formal 'No'

In formal writing, use 'no' instead of 'ali' to sound more sophisticated and professional.
💬

The Power of 'Pa'

Use 'pa' when telling a story to keep the momentum going. It sounds much more natural than repeating 'i' over and over.

Smart Tips

Always check if you've put a comma. If you used 'ali', 'a', or 'no', the comma is your best friend.

On je bogat ali nesretan. On je bogat, ali nesretan.

Replace 'i' with 'te' for the final item in a list of actions to sound more professional.

Molim vas provjerite dokument i pošaljite ga. Molim vas provjerite dokument te ga pošaljite.

Use the 'Nije... nego...' pattern. It's the most natural way to provide a correction in Croatian.

On nije doktor. On je zubar. On nije doktor, nego zubar.

Use 'no' at the start of a clause for a more dramatic, literary effect.

Htjeli smo ići, ali kiša je padala. Htjeli smo ići, no kiša je padala.

Pronunciación

Ja bih došao [pause], ali ne mogu.

Clausal Pause

In coordinated sentences with commas (ali, a, stoga), there is a slight drop in pitch and a brief pause before the conjunction.

Rising-Falling

Hoćeš li kávu ↗ ili čaj? ↘

Standard disjunctive question intonation.

Memorízalo

Mnemotecnia

Remember 'A-A-N-N-V' for adversatives: A, Ali, Nego, No, Već — they ALWAYS take a comma!

Asociación visual

Rhyme

Kad je 'i', zareza ni; kad je 'ali', zarez ne fali!

Story

Marko went to the store AND (i) bought milk. He wanted bread BUT (ali) they were out. He could wait OR (ili) go elsewhere. THEREFORE (stoga) he left. ONLY (samo) his dog stayed behind.

Word Web

veznikzarezrečenicasuprotnostzaključakiznimkanizanje

Desafío

Write 5 sentences about your morning using one conjunction from each of the 5 categories.

Notas culturales

The use of 'te' is highly associated with formal writing and 'officialese' (birokratski stil). Using it in casual speech sounds overly stiff.

In coastal regions, 'ma' is often used instead of 'ali' at the start of a sentence for emphasis.

The conjunction 'pa' is used very frequently as a filler or to start a sentence, often losing its strict sequential meaning.

Most Croatian coordinating conjunctions are of Proto-Slavic origin (e.g., *i*, *a*).

Inicios de conversación

Što si radio jutros? (Koristi 'pa' za redoslijed)

Voliš li više planine ili more? Zašto?

Koje su prednosti i mane tvog posla? (Koristi 'ali' ili 'no')

Preguntas frecuentes (8)

'Ja pijem čaj, a on pije kavu.'

Značenjski da, ali 'no' je književni veznik i zvuči otmjenije.

Veznik 'te' koristimo u formalnom stilu za nabrajanje radnji koje su usko povezane. 'Proučite upute te ispunite obrazac.'

French moderate

et, mais, ou, donc

French often uses 'mais' where Croatian might prefer 'a' for simple contrast.

Japanese low
