Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use -n, -l, or -s suffixes to turn transitive verbs into actions done to oneself or between people.

  • Use -n for reflexive actions: жуу (to wash) -> жуыну (to wash oneself).
  • Use -l for passive voice: жазу (to write) -> жазылу (to be written).
  • Use -s for reciprocal actions: көру (to see) -> көрісу (to see each other).
Verb Stem + (-n/-l/-s) + Tense/Person Ending

Meanings

These suffixes modify the valency of a verb, allowing the subject to act upon themselves (reflexive), be acted upon (passive), or act mutually with others (reciprocal).

1

Reflexive

The subject performs the action on themselves.

“Ол киінді.”

“Мен жуындым.”

2

Passive

The subject undergoes the action performed by an external agent.

“Хат жазылды.”

“Есік ашылды.”

3

Reciprocal

The action is performed mutually between two or more subjects.

“Олар амандасты.”

“Біз таныстық.”
