The 'Postcard' (Post-card) and 'Inland Letter' (Antardeshiya Patra) were cultural icons in Maharashtra for decades. People would write in tiny script to fit as much information as possible on the limited space. Famous author P.L. Deshpande (Pu La) is known for his witty and touching letters. Reading his letters is considered a way to learn the 'best' Marathi. In many villages, the arrival of a letter was a public event. The person who could 'Patra Lihine' was often the most respected person in the 'Wadi' (hamlet). Even on Marathi Facebook groups, people often post 'Khule Patra' (Open Letters) to celebrities or politicians to express public sentiment.
