Conditional for Politeness and Softening

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use the conditional mood to transform direct commands into polite, sophisticated requests that respect social boundaries.

  • Use 'бих' + past active participle for polite statements (e.g., 'Бих искал' - I would like).
  • Use 'Би ли' + participle for questions to sound less demanding (e.g., 'Би ли помогнал?' - Would you help?).
  • Negative conditional 'Не бих' softens refusals or disagreements (e.g., 'Не бих казал' - I wouldn't say).
бих/би + [-л participle] = 😇 (Politeness)

Facile à confondre

Conditional for Politeness and Softening vs Imperative (Заповедно наклонение)

Using the imperative with 'моля' (please) is okay, but less sophisticated than the conditional.

Erreurs courantes

Аз иска бих кафе.

Бих искал кафе.

Бих искал (said by a woman).

Бих искала.

The participle must agree with the speaker's gender.

Би ли ми помогнал?

Using future 'will' for requests is an English-ism; use conditional in Bulgarian.

🎯

The 'Gender Trap'

If you are a man, always end in -л. If you are a woman, always end in -ла. It sounds simple, but it's the first thing to break under pressure!
💬

Don't be 'Too' Polite

With very close friends, using 'бих' can sound sarcastic or cold. Stick to the imperative for your best buddies.
⚠️

The 'Ли' Placement

In questions, the particle 'ли' must follow the auxiliary 'би', not the main verb. 'Би ли дошъл?' is correct; 'Би дошъл ли?' is wrong.

Smart Tips

Pause and change it to 'Бих искал'. It immediately upgrades your social status in the eyes of the listener.

Искам сметката. Бих искал сметката, моля.

Start your sentence with 'Не бих казал, че...'. It prevents the other person from becoming defensive.

Грешите. Не бих казал, че това е съвсем така.

Use 'Би ли било възможно' (Would it be possible). It's the ultimate 'softener' for big requests.

Може ли да ми помогнеш? Би ли било възможно да ми помогнеш?

Bulgarians value 'face'. Using the conditional allows someone to say 'no' to your request without it being a personal affront.

The Bulgarian conditional auxiliary 'бих' is derived from the Old Church Slavonic aorist of the verb 'бъда' (to be).

FAQ (6)

Yes, any verb can be put into the conditional mood to soften its meaning. Common ones include `искам` (want), `мога` (can), and `трябва` (must).

Exactly. It is the direct equivalent and is used in almost all the same social situations.

In very informal contexts, if the action is obvious (like passing the salt), they might shorten it, but it's rare. Usually, the verb is included.

People will still understand you, but it will sound like a basic grammatical error. It's one of the key markers of a C1 speaker to get this right.

`Би ли` is for someone you know (informal 'you'), while `Бихте ли` is for strangers or formal situations (formal 'You').

No, it actually sounds more polite than a direct 'не' (no). It suggests a hypothetical hesitation rather than a hard refusal.
