Dative with Verbs: To help, to give
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
In Armenian, the person receiving help or a gift takes the -ին (-in) or -ան (-an) ending.
- Use the Dative case for the person you are helping: 'Ես օգնում եմ ընկերոջս' (I help my friend).
- Use the Dative case for the recipient of a gift: 'Ես տալիս եմ գիրքը քեզ' (I give the book to you).
- The Dative ending usually attaches to the noun or pronoun, often changing the final vowel.

Meanings
The Dative case indicates the indirect object of a verb, specifically identifying who is receiving an action or benefit.
Benefactive (Helping)
Indicates the person being assisted.
“Ես օգնում եմ եղբորս։”
“Մենք օգնում ենք ուսուցչին։”
Recipient (Giving)
Indicates the person receiving an object.
“Ես տալիս եմ գումարը նրան։”
“Նա տալիս է նվերը քրոջը։”
