Smoking is often seen as a social lubricant among older men. It's common to see men smoking while playing chess or drinking palm wine (Teuk Thnot). While not strictly forbidden by the five precepts, smoking is increasingly discouraged for monks. Many pagodas are now designated as 'Smoke-Free Zones'. Among the younger generation in Phnom Penh, smoking cigarettes is becoming less 'cool' compared to vaping or not smoking at all, due to Western health influences. In the countryside, some elderly people still smoke 'Thnâm Chôl' (tobacco rolled in dried leaves), which is much stronger than commercial cigarettes.
