Dobrý deň

Entering a doctor's waiting room requires a 'Dobrý deň' to the entire room, not just the nurse. It acknowledges everyone's shared presence. In smaller villages, it is expected that you greet everyone you pass on the street with 'Dobrý deň', even if you have never met them. While international companies use 'Ahoj', traditional Slovak companies strictly adhere to 'Dobrý deň' until a 'Tykáme si' (let's use the informal) agreement is made. Young people often use 'Dobrý' as a halfway point between formal and informal when speaking to people slightly older than them.
