इसे कैसे इस्तेमाल करें
Neutral. Can be used in both highly formal and very casual situations.
In casual speech, people often duplicate it as 安安静静 (ān ān jìng jìng) for emphasis, e.g., 安安静静地坐着 (sit nice and quietly).
- Using 是 (shì) instead of 很 (hěn) to link the subject and the adjective (e.g., 房间是安静 instead of 房间很安静).
- Forgetting the structural particle 的 (de) when modifying a noun (e.g., 安静地方 instead of 安静的地方).
- Confusing 安静 (quiet) with 干净 (clean) due to similar pronunciation (ān jìng vs gān jìng).
- Using 安静 to describe a calm emotional state instead of 平静 (e.g., 我的心很安静 instead of 我的心很平静).
- Trying to use 安静 as a transitive verb to quiet someone else (e.g., 我安静了他 instead of 我让他安静下来).
सुझाव
Don't use 是
Never say '我是安静' or '房间是安静'. Always use 很 or another adverb: '我很安静', '房间很安静'.
Add 的 for nouns
When placing the word before a noun, always add 的. '安静的房间' (quiet room), not '安静房间'.
Commanding silence
If you need people to be quiet, a firm '请安静' (Please be quiet) is polite but effective.
Listen for signs
In public places in China, listen for announcements saying '请保持安静'. It means you need to lower your voice.
Reduplication
In writing, use '安安静静' to make your description sound more vivid and literary. Example: 她安安静静地坐在角落里。
Quiet vs Calm
Remember the rule of thumb: 安静 is for ears (no noise), 平静 is for the heart/eyes (no emotional/physical turbulence).
Tone pair practice
Practice the 1st-4th tone combination. Flat and high (ān), then sharp and falling (jìng). It sounds like a gentle start ending with a firm stop.
Quiet down
To say 'quiet down', use '安静下来'. You cannot use 安静 as a transitive verb (e.g., you can't '安静' a baby).
Common pairings
Memorize the phrase '安静的环境' (quiet environment). It is incredibly common in daily conversation and writing.
Positive connotation
In Chinese, being described as an '安静的人' is usually a compliment, implying you are thoughtful, well-behaved, and peaceful.

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले सवाल
10 सवालYes, absolutely. You can say '他是一个安静的人' (He is a quiet person). It means the person is introverted, doesn't talk much, or has a calm demeanor. It is generally considered a positive or neutral trait in Chinese culture.
安静 refers to the absence of noise or a quiet personality. 平静 refers to a state of calmness, often emotional or physical (like a calm sea). If a room has no sound, it is 安静. If your heart is not racing after a scare, it is 平静.
While '闭嘴' (bì zuǐ) literally means 'shut up' and is very rude, you can forcefully say '安静!' (Quiet!) to command silence. It is less rude than 'shut up' but still very direct, like a teacher yelling at a noisy class.
In Chinese, adjectives can act as verbs (predicates). However, a bare adjective usually implies a comparison. To simply state a fact ('The room is quiet'), you must use a degree adverb like 很 (very) to link the subject and the adjective. It doesn't necessarily mean 'very' in this context; it just completes the grammar.
By itself, it is an adjective. However, when combined with the directional complement 下来 (xià lái), it functions as a verb phrase: 安静下来 (to quiet down). For example, '孩子们安静下来了' (The children quieted down).
保持 (bǎo chí) means 'to keep' or 'to maintain'. 保持安静 means 'keep quiet' or 'maintain silence'. It is a formal phrase commonly seen on signs in libraries, hospitals, and examination halls.
Yes, 安安静静 is the reduplicated form of 安静. Reduplicating an adjective in Chinese often intensifies the feeling or makes it sound more descriptive and affectionate. '安安静静地看书' means 'reading a book nice and quietly'.
'jìng' is pronounced with a falling 4th tone. Start high and drop your pitch sharply. The 'j' is like the 'j' in 'jeep', but with your tongue behind your lower teeth. The 'ing' rhymes with the English word 'sing'.
While understandable, it is more natural to say '平静的海' (píng jìng de hǎi) for a calm sea without waves. Use 安静 if you specifically mean the sea is not making any rushing noise, but 平静 is the standard collocation for water.
The most common opposite is 吵 (chǎo) or 吵闹 (chǎo nào), which means noisy. For example, '这里很吵' (It is very noisy here) is the exact opposite of '这里很安静'.
