Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

When two words meet, vowels often change or merge to keep the flow of speech smooth.

  • Vowel + Vowel often results in a glide (y or v) insertion.
  • Short vowels at the end of words may drop before a following vowel.
  • Long vowels often shorten when a suffix is added.
Word A (vowel) + Word B (vowel) = Word A + [glide] + Word B

Meanings

Vowel modification (Sandhi) is the process where sounds change at the boundary of two words to make pronunciation easier.

1

Glide Insertion

Adding 'y' or 'v' between vowels.

“amma + illu = ammayillu”

“ra + u = ravu”

2

Vowel Elision

Dropping the final vowel of the first word.

“vachina + appudu = vachinappudu”

“unna + akkada = unnakkada”

3

Vowel Shortening

Long vowels become short before suffixes.

“amma + ki = ammakki”

“nanna + ki = nannaki”

Vowel Modification Patterns

a/aa/e Vowel Insert 'y' Word-y-Word

Listen for the glide

When listening to native speakers, focus on the tiny 'y' or 'v' sound between words.
⚠️

Don't pause

Pausing between words makes you sound like a beginner. Practice linking them.
🎯

Record yourself

Record yourself saying 'amma illu' and 'ammayillu'. Compare the flow.
💬

Speak naturally

Don't worry about being perfect; native speakers will understand you even if you miss a glide.

Smart Tips

Think: Glide or Elide?

amma illu ammayillu

Shorten the long vowel first.

raaju ki raajuki

Let the vowels merge.

pelli ayindi pellayindi

Write it as you say it.

vachina appudu vachinappudu

발음

y: [j], v: [ʋ]

Glide Insertion

The 'y' or 'v' should be soft and quick, not a hard consonant.

vachin[a] + [a]ppudu -> vachinappudu

Elision

The first vowel is completely swallowed by the second.

Flowing

ammayillu ->

Continuous pitch

Memorize It

Mnemonic

Y is for A, V is for O. If the vowel is short, let it go!

Visual Association

Imagine a bridge being built between two islands. If the island ends in A, the bridge is made of Y-shaped wood. If it ends in O, it's a V-shaped metal beam.

Rhyme

When vowels meet and start to fight, add a glide to make it right.

Story

Amma (Mother) wanted to visit her house (illu). But the path was broken. She built a 'y' bridge to connect them. Now she walks 'ammayillu' every day.
