Expressing Counterfactual Statements
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use 'da' + indicative to express things that are impossible now or didn't happen in the past.
- Present counterfactual: 'da' + present/past tense + Kondicional I (e.g., Da imam vremena, došao bih).
- Past counterfactual: 'da' + past tense + Kondicional II (e.g., Da sam znao, bio bih došao).
- Never use 'ako' for counterfactuals; 'ako' is for real possibilities only.
Meanings
Expresses hypothetical situations that contradict known facts in the present or events that did not occur in the past.
Present Impossibility
Situations that are currently not true.

Start your advice with 'Da sam na tvom mjestu...' (If I were in your place).
Use 'Da sam barem...' followed by the past tense.
Use Kondicional II (bih bio + participle) for past consequences.
