Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Move a non-subject element to the front of the sentence to highlight it, forcing the verb into the second position.
- Fronting: Place the emphasized element at the very start of the clause.
- V2 Constraint: The finite verb must immediately follow the fronted element.
- Subject Shift: The subject moves to the position immediately after the verb.
Meanings
A stylistic device where a word or phrase that is usually placed later in the sentence is moved to the front to create contrast, surprise, or thematic focus.
