Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Perfective verbs describe a completed action with a clear result, unlike imperfective verbs which focus on the process.
- Use perfective for one-time, finished events: 'Prečítal som knihu' (I finished reading the book).
- Perfective verbs cannot be used in the present tense to describe ongoing actions.
- Perfective verbs often use prefixes to change the meaning of a base verb: 'písať' -> 'napísať'.

الأسئلة الشائعة (8)
Slovak uses aspect to distinguish between the process and the result of an action.
It depends on the verb. You must learn them as pairs, like `písať` and `napísať`.
Only if you want to express a future completed action. `Napíšem` means 'I will write'.
Try to use a descriptive phrase or stick to the imperfective until you learn the pair.
They are equally important. Perfective is often easier to conjugate but harder to choose correctly.
Most do, but some verbs are only imperfective, like `byť` (to be).
Yes, `Nenapísal som to` (I didn't write it).
English uses tense (I wrote vs I was writing) to express what Slovak does with aspect.
