Direct Objects for Animate Masculine Nouns

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

When a masculine noun is a person or animal and is the object of a verb, add -а to the end.

  • If the noun ends in a consonant, add -а: 'брат' (brother) becomes 'брата'.
  • If the noun ends in -ь or -й, replace it with -я: 'хлопець' (boy) becomes 'хлопця'.
  • This only applies to animate nouns (people and animals), not objects like 'table' or 'book'.
